5 Reasons why boxing is becoming extinct
5. The Mayweather Pacquaio fight will probably never happen. Manny will fight a few more times then retire to a life of pickup basketball and politics. Floyd has been charged with 8 crimes, 4 of which are felonies and will more than likely spend the next 12 months dealing with these legal issues. One many thought would be the best fight of the last 10-15 years will never happen.
4. The Heavyweight division is lackluster at best. This is the only division that many Americans even care about and it hasn't been good in a long while. The division is now run by a pair of giant Russian brothers who refuse to fight each other and America's hope lies with ex-college football and basketball players.
3. Pay-per-view. At this point, does the WBC, WBA, IBF, Golden Boy or whoever really think that people are going to shell out the bucks to watch boxing? Pacquaio v. Clottey, weak fight, weak undercard. (Happy I didn't pay for it). Mosley v. Mora, another weak fight. (Happy I didn't pay for it). Boxing can't try and charge for these non heavyweight, boring fights. The powers that be in boxing need to look to Spike TV, Versus and CBS in an attempt to show fans that quality product and its available for FREE! Once you get some folks excited about the sport again then you should start charging.
2. Too many weight classes. According to ESPN, there are 16 weight classes! The worse part is, that sometimes fights occur at a "catch weight". What a joke!
1. UFC. It seems like every week there is a big fight in the UFC. At this juncture UFC is the polar opposite of boxing. UFC has everything a sports league could hope for, a nasty villain (Brock), eye candy (the cards girls are sizzling) and lastly and most importantly a young fan base who seems to have an insatiable appetite for the sport.
Boxing is on life support and needs some thing big to turn itself around.
