Football in July

A few years ago the MLB decided to spice up its All-Star game by making it worth something.  The winning league gets home field advantage in the World Series.  I have always thought that this was a great decision, its great to see players actually get excited when they win an All-star game.  So I started to think, how could the NFL improve the Pro Bowl?


How do you improve on the Pro Bowl?  Adopting the MLB's stance and giving home field advantage to the winner would be quite interesting.  But wouldn't work for a number of reasons.  So I decided to focus on the game itself.  The Pro Bowl needs something exciting to spice it up since we all know players aren't giving their all. (for fear of serious injury)  Oh I know!  How bout some special rules that apply only to the Pro Bowl!  Where can we get some rules that are interesting and exciting? Oh I know!  The now defunct XFL!  The Pro Bowl should adopt 3 rules from the XFL.  They are 1) Bump and run coverage should be allowed by defensive backs.  Let the receivers and defensive backs really go at it.  2) No PAT, after a touchdown the offense must go for a two-point conversion.  If the opposing team intercepts the ball or recovers a fumble and returns it for a touchdown, they should be award 11 points.  3) The Pro Bowl game should adopt the NCAA overtime rules.  I contend that overtime in college football may be the best thing in all over sports.  The XFL may not have lasted long, but it was at least a nice spectacle while it lasted.  Thats what All-Star games should be, great spectacles that are different from the normal rules of the game.

    I disagree. Bump and run? No PAT? What are the kickers supposed to do? Be satisfied with punting it away and kicking off the whole time... oh I guess they get the FGAs unless you want to take those away too. There's a reason the XFL didn't last...

 According to knoxnews.com, you guys are currently searching for a new mascot.  I hear you still want to be  called the Rebels, but you feel like "Colonel Reb" is too old south and you've narrowed the mascot choices down to either a horse, a lion, a bear, a land shark or a hotty and toddy.   Lets eliminate the land shark and the lion right off the bat.  Lion is way over used in the mascot world and what does a land shark have to do with Ole Miss?  Bear and horse are out.  Both are overused as well.  A hotty and toddy?  Really?  Your mascot is going to be an alcoholic beverage? Nope not really smart for a college to use alcohol as a mascot.  To be perfectly honest I think the school needs a name and mascot change.   An old southern school that calls itself the "Rebels" just screams old south.  Not to worry Ole Miss, Hugo Brie is on it.  Naming teams is something I do, I'm pretty good at it. Slick James "Lights Out" Toney

Now that a few days have passed and the dust has settled lets take a minute to examine the Randy Couture vs. James Toney or as some less civilized would call the MMA vs. Boxing match. First off not taking away anything from Randy he had a job to do and he did it but clearly James was just looking to make a lot of noise with this fight and he succeeded. He couldn't get down to any kind of athletic shape if his life depended on it and his big money boxing days are clearly behind him even though he holds some type of joke boxing belt. So in a moment of pure genius he plays off of a debate that has been brewing in the combat sports underworld, Who would win a fight The Boxer or The Mixed Martial Artist. Now both of these boys were in there prime when i was failing English in Jr. High so to say this is even close to a true test of that question is absolutely absurd. Allen "The Answer" Iverson

I remember when this guy was the most exciting thing about the NBA.  Now A.I. is considering playing in China?  Why?  I really don't get it.  Why not just hold open workouts and let teams see that you are serious about making a last run at it.  I just fear that if he goes to China thats the last we'll here of him.  Here are some of the highlights from his career: All Rookie First Team (1997), Rookie of the Year (1997), NBA MVP (2001), 4x Scoring Champion (1999, 2001, 2002, 2005) All NBA Third Team (2006), All NBA Second Team (2000, 2002, 200) All NBA First Team (1999. 2001, 2005),  oh we can't forget this:
